BMW 3 Series: General Information
The BMW 3 Series is the company's core compact executive car and, for decades, the benchmark for the class. Its seventh generation, code G20, reached U.S. showrooms for the 2019 model year on the CLAR architecture, stretching 2.9 inches longer and 0.6 inches wider than the F30 while shedding weight through more aluminium and high-strength steel. Trunk space grew to 16.9 cu ft, the body is roughly 50 percent stiffer in torsion, and lift-related dampers are fitted at all four corners. U.S. cars are built in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and in Munich.
The U.S. lineup is narrower than the F30's but covers more ground per model. The 330i uses a 255-hp 2.0-liter B48 turbo four; the M340i, added during the 2020 model year, uses a 382-hp 3.0-liter B58 turbo six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid starter-generator, an M Sport differential and adaptive M suspension. A 288-hp 330e plug-in hybrid arrived for 2021 in rear- and all-wheel drive, offering up to 75 MPGe. A mid-cycle LCI facelift for 2023 brought reshaped lighting and the curved twin-screen iDrive 8 dashboard, and for 2025 BMW added 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance to the 330i, lifted the M340i to 386 hp and 398 lb-ft, and dropped the 330e from the U.S. range.
Across its life the U.S. G20 spans 255 to 386 horsepower (503 in the M3), EPA ratings from the low 20s to 31 mpg combined, and prices from about $40,000 to the low $60,000s. Every version uses an eight-speed automatic, seats five and carries 16.9 cu ft of luggage — 13.2 cu ft in the battery-equipped 330e.
