The BMW 4 Series is the two-door counterpart to the 3 Series, split off into its own model line for 2014. The second generation — G22 coupe, G23 convertible and G26 Gran Coupe — reached the U.S. for the 2021 model year and is best known for its tall vertical kidney grille, a deliberate callback to the 328 and CS coupes of the 1930s and 1960s. It sits on the CLAR platform alongside the G20 3 Series but with a wider track, a lower roofline, extra bracing and its own suspension tune. The convertible switched from the previous folding hardtop to a lighter fabric roof that opens in 18 seconds at up to 31 mph.
The U.S. lineup pairs a 255-hp 2.0-liter B48 turbo four in the 430i with a 382-hp 3.0-liter B58 turbo six plus a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in the M440i, both driving through an eight-speed Sport automatic in rear- or all-wheel drive. BMW launched for 2021 with the coupe and convertible only, added the four-door Gran Coupe for 2022, and broadened the lineup each year; a separate M4 sits above the range. For 2025 a facelift brought mild-hybrid assistance to the 430i, raised the M440i to 386 hp and 398 lb-ft, and adopted the curved iDrive display.
