The BMW 8 Series is the brand's flagship grand tourer, revived for the 2019 model year after a 20-year absence and sold in three bodies: the G15 coupe, the G14 convertible with a fabric roof, and the four-door G16 Gran Coupe that joined for 2020. All three sit on BMW's CLAR platform with a heavily braced structure, standard adaptive M suspension, and a mix of aluminium, magnesium and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic in the body.
The U.S. range launched with only the M850i xDrive and its 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, adding the 335-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder 840i in rear- or all-wheel drive for 2020. A separate M8 sits above the line. Standard kit includes an eight-speed Sport automatic, an M Sport differential on the V8 cars, Integral Active Steering, and a laserlight headlight option; the Gran Coupe stretches the wheelbase by 7.9 inches, seats five instead of four and carries the most luggage in the range.
