The Honda Civic Type R is the highest-performance version of the Civic and the flagship of Honda's Type R line, which began in Japan in 1997. Two generations have been sold in America. The FK8 (2017-2021) was built at Honda's Swindon plant in England, rode on 20-inch wheels with 245/30ZR20 summer tires, made 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, and ended when the Swindon factory closed. The FL5 (2023 onward) is built in Yorii, Japan, looks noticeably more restrained, moves to wider 19-inch wheels on 265/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and raises output to 315 hp and 310 lb-ft, making it the most powerful Honda production car ever sold in the U.S. There was no 2022 model year: the FK8 finished after 2021 and the FL5 arrived as a 2023.
The Type R has repeatedly held the front-wheel-drive production-car lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The FK8 set 7:43.80 in April 2017; after Renault's Megane R.S. Trophy-R took the honour in 2019, the FL5 reclaimed it in April 2023 with 7:44.881 over the circuit's longer post-2019 measured lap. Both generations seat four, are EPA-rated at 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway on premium fuel, and have carried U.S. base prices from $33,900 for the 2017 launch car to $46,895 for the 2026.

The first Civic Type R ever sold in the United States went on sale on 14 June 2017 in a single, comprehensively equipped Touring specification with no factory options beyond paint. Its 2.0-litre K20C1 turbo four makes 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual with rev-match control and a helical limited-slip differential. The Type R's first full model year in the U.S. was a straight carryover: the same Swindon-built FK8 with 306 hp, 295 lb-ft, a six-speed manual and a single fully equipped Touring specification. Honda announced 2018 pricing in November 2017 at $34,100 ($34,990 with the $890 destination charge), then revised the MSRP to $34,700 on 1 May 2018. Demand ran ahead of supply and dealer premiums were common through the year.

For 2019 the Type R kept its 306 hp, 295 lb-ft turbo four and six-speed manual but answered the loudest complaints about the cabin: the Display Audio system regained a physical volume knob and hard buttons, fan speed got its own switches, and the centre console picked up a cupholder that actually holds a large drink. Sonic Gray Pearl joined the U.S. colour list for the first time. Honda's January 2019 pricing release listed it at $35,700, or $36,620 with the $920 destination charge.

2020 brought the FK8's mid-life update. Power stayed at 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, but Honda stiffened the suspension bushings, sped up the Adaptive Damper System tenfold, fitted lighter two-piece front brake rotors and opened up the grille by 13 percent for better cooling. Inside came an Alcantara steering wheel, a shorter-throw shifter and, for the first time on any Honda, the LogR performance datalogger; Honda Sensing also became standard. It listed at $36,995, or $37,950 with the $955 destination charge.

2021 was the FK8's farewell in the U.S. and the last Civic Type R built at Honda's Swindon plant in England, which stopped making cars that year. The standard Touring carried over the 2020 update untouched: 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, a six-speed manual with rev-match control, adaptive dampers, Brembo front brakes and standard Honda Sensing. It listed at $37,895, or $38,890 with the $995 destination charge.

A one-year-only send-off for the FK8, limited to 600 U.S. cars, all painted Phoenix Yellow with a gloss-black roof, mirror caps and hood vent and an individually numbered serial plate. Honda fitted lightweight BBS forged wheels, specially tuned dampers and recalibrated steering, then stripped sound deadening, the rear wiper, the tonneau cover and the rear heater ducts. Curb weight fell to 3,071 lb, 50 lb under the standard car, and MotorTrend measured 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. It listed at $43,995, or $44,990 with the $995 destination charge.

The sixth-generation Type R, code FL5, was revealed in July 2022 and reached U.S. dealers in late October 2022 as a 2023 model, ending a one-year gap after the FK8. Built in Yorii, Japan rather than England, it is visually calmer but wider in track, swapping the old 20-inch wheels for 19-inch rims on much wider 265/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The refined K20C1 turbo four now makes 315 hp and 310 lb-ft, the highest output of any Honda production car sold in America. It launched at $42,895, or $43,990 with the $1,095 destination charge.
