The Honda Civic Type R is the highest-performance version of the Civic and the flagship of Honda's Type R line, which began in Japan in 1997. Every version is a front-wheel-drive hatchback built around a 2.0-litre K20C1 turbocharged VTEC four, a six-speed manual gearbox with rev-match control and a helical limited-slip differential; no automatic has ever been offered. The United States went without a Type R for two decades and finally received one in June 2017, slotted above the Civic Si.
Two generations have been sold in America. The FK8 (2017-2021) was built at Honda's Swindon plant in England, rode on 20-inch wheels with 245/30ZR20 summer tires, made 306 hp and 295 lb-ft, and ended when the Swindon factory closed. The FL5 (2023 onward) is built in Yorii, Japan, looks noticeably more restrained, moves to wider 19-inch wheels on 265/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and raises output to 315 hp and 310 lb-ft, making it the most powerful Honda production car ever sold in the U.S. There was no 2022 model year: the FK8 finished after 2021 and the FL5 arrived as a 2023.
