Honda Insight — Specs, Trims, Prices & Owner Reviews

The third-generation Honda Insight is a compact four-door hybrid sedan sold in the United States for the 2019 through 2022 model years. Where the first two Insights were oddly shaped liftbacks that advertised their efficiency, this one deliberately looks like an ordinary car: it is built on the tenth-generation Civic platform, shares that car's interior architecture and its Greensburg, Indiana assembly line, and stretches about an inch longer than a Civic sedan. Honda positioned it just below the mid-size Accord Hybrid as its dedicated high-mileage model and a direct answer to the Toyota Prius.

Honda Insight: General Information

Every Insight uses Honda's two-motor Sport Hybrid i-MMD system: a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder paired with a 129-hp AC permanent-magnet traction motor and a compact 1.2 kWh lithium-ion pack. There is no conventional gearbox — the electric motor drives the front wheels almost all the time and the gasoline engine usually acts as a generator, clutching in directly only at higher cruising speeds. Combined system output is 151 hp, and because the battery sits under the rear seat rather than in the trunk, the Insight keeps essentially the same cargo hold as a Civic sedan.

The range spanned LX, EX and Touring, with Honda Sensing driver assistance standard across the board and a fully digital instrument cluster borrowed from the Accord. The Insight earned a five-star NHTSA overall rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and reviewers consistently praised its ride, brake feel and packaging while criticising engine noise under hard acceleration. Honda announced in April 2022 that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending that June and the role passing to a new Civic Hybrid.

Honda Insight by model year

2019 Honda Insight

2019 Honda Insight LX

The launch model year for the third-generation Insight, which went on sale at U.S. dealers in June 2018. The LX is the entry point at $22,930 and gets the full two-motor hybrid powertrain and complete Honda Sensing suite as standard, but makes do with a 5.0-inch screen, six-speaker audio, cloth seats and 16-inch alloys. Its lighter equipment load makes it one of the two highest-mileage trims at 55/49 mpg city/highway.

2019 Honda Insight EX

The mid-grade EX costs $24,160 and is where the Insight becomes properly equipped, swapping the LX's 5.0-inch display for an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — features the LX cannot be optioned with. It also adds eight-speaker audio, two 2.5-amp USB ports, keyless entry, remote engine start, a rear-seat centre armrest and Honda's LaneWatch blind-spot camera. Efficiency is unchanged from the LX at 55/49 mpg.

2019 Honda Insight Touring

The range-topping Touring lists at $28,190 and brings leather upholstery to an Insight for the first and only time, along with heated power front seats, dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, LED fog lights, 10-speaker audio with a trunk-mounted subwoofer and built-in navigation. The extra weight and 17-inch wheels cost it fuel economy, dropping the EPA rating to 51/45 mpg. The subwoofer also trims the trunk from 15.1 to 14.7 cubic feet.

2020 Honda Insight

2020 Honda Insight LX

A near-carryover second year for the Insight, with the price holding at $22,930 for the base LX. The one substantive change across the range is an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, which emits a sound at low speeds so pedestrians can hear the car when it is running silently on electricity. Powertrain, 55/49 mpg rating and equipment are otherwise unchanged.

2020 Honda Insight EX

The volume EX rose $150 to $24,310 for 2020 and, like every Insight, gained the new low-speed pedestrian sound generator. It remains the cheapest way into the 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adds eight-speaker audio, remote engine start, proximity key entry and split-folding rear seats over the LX. Fuel economy is identical to the LX at 55/49 mpg.

2020 Honda Insight Touring

The Touring went up $150 to $28,340 and carried on as the only leather-lined Insight, with heated power front seats, dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, LED fog lights, navigation and a 10-speaker system with a trunk subwoofer. As before, the 17-inch wheels and extra equipment drop the EPA rating to 51/45 mpg and the subwoofer takes the trunk down to 14.7 cubic feet. The new pedestrian sound generator is the only functional change.

2021 Honda Insight

2021 Honda Insight LX

The final year for the entry-level Insight, which Honda dropped from the U.S. line-up for 2022. The LX again held at $22,930 — the same sticker it launched with in 2019 — and kept the 55/49 mpg rating, 16-inch alloys and 5.0-inch display. The 2021 range-wide changes, added blind-spot monitoring and a new Radiant Red Metallic colour, applied to the EX and Touring rather than the LX.

2021 Honda Insight EX

The EX rose $500 to $24,810 for 2021 and gained the year's headline upgrade: blind-spot information with a rear cross-traffic monitor, now standard. It keeps the 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-speaker audio, remote start and proximity key entry, and shares the LX's 55/49 mpg rating and 15.1-cubic-foot trunk. Radiant Red Metallic joined the colour palette.

2021 Honda Insight Touring

At $28,840 the 2021 Touring is $500 dearer than before and also picks up standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Everything else carries over: leather seating, heated power front seats, dual-zone climate, moonroof, LED fog lights, navigation, and a 10-speaker system with a trunk subwoofer that trims cargo space to 14.7 cubic feet. The 17-inch wheels and extra mass keep it at 51/45 mpg.

2022 Honda Insight

2022 Honda Insight EX

For its final U.S. model year Honda simplified the Insight to two trims, dropping the entry-level LX and making the EX the new base car at $25,760. Mechanically nothing changed — the same 1.5-liter Atkinson four and 129-hp traction motor deliver 151 hp of combined system output and a 55/49 mpg EPA rating. Honda confirmed in April 2022 that the Insight would end after this model year, with production stopping in June 2022.

2022 Honda Insight Touring

The last Insight Touring listed at $29,790 and again topped the range with leather seating, heated power front seats, dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, LED fog lights, navigation and 10-speaker audio with a trunk-mounted subwoofer. Its 17-inch wheels and 3,078-lb curb weight hold the EPA rating to 51/45 mpg and cut the trunk to 14.7 cubic feet. Honda ended Insight production in June 2022.
