Honda Ridgeline: General Information
The Honda Ridgeline is the odd one out among mid-size pickups: instead of a body-on-frame ladder chassis it uses a unibody structure shared with the Honda Pilot and Passport, with a transverse-mounted V6, fully independent suspension at all four corners and only one body style — a crew cab with a roughly five-foot composite bed. It was conceived by Honda R&D Americas specifically for the U.S. market and is assembled in Lincoln, Alabama.
There have been two generations with a gap in between. The first-generation truck (2006–2014 model years) ended production in early 2015, and after a one-model-year hiatus the second generation went on sale in June 2016 as a 2017 model. Honda says the second-generation Ridgeline shares about 73 percent of its components with the third-generation Pilot. In July 2026 Honda confirmed a third-generation Ridgeline for a 2028 release, with an 18-month production pause at the Alabama plant to make the switch.
What sets the Ridgeline apart are its packaging tricks: a lockable, drainable 7.3 cu ft "in-bed trunk" beneath the bed floor, a dual-action tailgate that drops down or swings out to the side, a bed-mounted 115-volt AC outlet and — through the 2023 model year — a truck-bed audio system that turns the bed panels into speakers. The second-generation truck uses a single 3.5-liter V6 rated at 280 hp and 262 lb-ft, is rated to tow 5,000 lb with all-wheel drive, and returns EPA figures in the 18–19 mpg city / 23–26 mpg highway range. Second-generation pricing has climbed from the mid-$30,000s for an early all-wheel-drive base truck to the high-$40,000s for a loaded Black Edition.

2017 Honda Ridgeline RT FWD
The entry point to the all-new second-generation Ridgeline and the first front-wheel-drive Ridgeline ever sold in the U.S. It pairs the 280-hp 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic and standard equipment including a 5-inch colour display, rearview camera, push-button start and 18-inch alloys. Starting MSRP was $29,475 excluding the $940 destination charge.

The base trim with Honda's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive and Intelligent Traction Management, which adds snow, mud and sand modes plus Trailer Stability Assist. All-wheel drive raises the tow rating from 3,500 lb to the Ridgeline's full 5,000 lb. Starting MSRP was $31,375; Honda dropped the AWD option on the RT for 2018, making 2017 its only year.

The blacked-out Sport with i-VTM4 all-wheel drive, Intelligent Traction Management and the full 5,000 lb tow rating. Starting MSRP was $34,915, a $1,900 premium over the front-drive Sport. For 2018 the Sport became the cheapest way into an all-wheel-drive Ridgeline once the RT lost its AWD option.

An all-new top-tier trim for 2017, sold only with all-wheel drive. The 2017 launch flagship and a brand-new nameplate for the Ridgeline. The base Ridgeline, now front-wheel drive only — Honda deleted the RT's all-wheel-drive option for 2018, so the cheapest AWD Ridgeline became the Sport. The RT also lost the Modern Steel Metallic paint that had been shared with the departing RTS. Powertrain is unchanged at 280 hp through a 6-speed automatic; starting MSRP rose $155 to $29,630.

The 2020 update replaced the 6-speed automatic with a ZF-sourced 9-speed, revised the front-end styling, extended the rear door opening and made Honda Sensing, the 8-inch touchscreen and a power locking tailgate standard across the range. With the RT and RTL-T deleted, the Sport became the entry model, so its $33,900 MSRP represents a jump in the range's starting price rather than a price rise on this trim. This was the final year for a front-wheel-drive Ridgeline; AWD became standard for 2021.

The entry all-wheel-drive Ridgeline for 2020, pairing i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive with the new 9-speed automatic and the full 5,000 lb tow rating.
