The Hyundai Elantra is Hyundai's compact, front-wheel-drive sedan, sold in the United States since the 1992 model year and known at home in South Korea as the Avante. It slots between the subcompact Accent and the midsize Sonata, and it has been Hyundai's American volume leader for most of its life, going head to head with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Kia Forte and Volkswagen Jetta. Because its interior volume is unusually generous for the class, the EPA has repeatedly classified the Elantra as a midsize car even though the market treats it as a compact.
Since 2015 the U.S. Elantra has spanned three generations. The fifth-generation MD/UD car (2011–2016 model years) used a 1.8-liter Nu four with 145 hp, plus a 173-hp 2.0-liter in the Sport. The sixth-generation AD (2017–2020) switched to a 147-hp 2.0-liter, added a 128-hp 1.4-liter turbo Eco and a genuinely quick 201-hp 1.6-liter turbo Sport, and picked up a facelift for 2019. The seventh-generation CN7 arrived for 2021 on the K3 platform with "Parametric Dynamics" styling, a 139-hp hybrid, an N Line and — from 2022 — the 276-hp Elantra N; it was facelifted for 2024 and won North American Car of the Year for 2021, a title the fifth-generation car had also taken in 2012.
Standout traits are value and warranty rather than driving thrills: Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage, a long standard-equipment list and, from 2021, a whole suite of SmartSense driver aids on every trim. Power across the tracked years runs from 128 hp to 201 hp for the mainstream cars, EPA economy from the mid-20s to 54 mpg combined in the Hybrid Blue, and base prices from about $17,000 to roughly $30,000 before destination.

SE is the volume 2015 Elantra sedan and the entry point to the range at $17,250 with the six-speed manual. It carries the 145-hp 1.8-liter Nu four introduced with the 2014 facelift, along with a driver's blind-spot mirror and Driver Selectable Steering Mode. New for 2015 is an SE Style Package that adds a sunroof, projector headlights with LED accents, chrome belt molding and a leather-wrapped wheel and shifter.

It is the final model year for the fifth-generation Elantra before the all-new AD car arrives for 2017.
2016 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition
Value Edition is new for 2016 and replaces the previous SE Style Package, landing at $19,700 with the six-speed automatic. For the money it bundles 16-inch alloy wheels borrowed from the old Elantra Coupe SE, a power sunroof, heated front seats, a proximity key with push-button start, a leather-wrapped wheel and shifter and side-mirror turn signals. Power is the standard 145-hp 1.8-liter.
2016 Hyundai Elantra Sport
Sport keeps the 173-hp 2.0-liter Nu GDI four and drops to $21,250 for 2016 after Hyundai stripped out the previously standard leather seats and sunroof to hit a lower price. It still gets the sport-tuned chassis, 17-inch alloys, LED tail lights, leatherette door inserts and a power driver's seat, and an optional Tech package restores navigation, a seven-inch screen, 360-watt audio and a sunroof. This is the last year for the 2.0-liter Elantra Sport before the 1.6-liter turbo takes over.

The 2017 Elantra is an all-new sixth-generation (AD) car, and SE is the base version at $17,150 with the six-speed manual. It uses a new 147-hp 2.0-liter Nu four in place of the old 1.8-liter and rides on a stiffer body with a longer, more formal roofline. The optional Popular Equipment package adds alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic headlights and a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — though it cannot be had with the manual.

Value Edition arrived mid-way through the 2017 model year at $20,250 as a one-box answer to the SE's option sheet. Eco is new for 2017 and is the economy champion of the range at $20,650. It swaps the 2.0-liter for a 128-hp 1.4-liter Kappa turbo with 156 lb-ft available from just 1,400 rpm, paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The result is 32 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, several mpg better than any other Elantra.
2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport
Released roughly halfway through the 2017 model year at $21,650 with the six-speed manual, the Sport is the first genuinely quick Elantra. A 201-hp 1.6-liter Gamma turbo replaces the outgoing 2.0-liter, and an independent multi-link rear axle takes over from the standard car's torsion beam. The big change for 2020 is under the SE's hood: the 147-hp 2.0-liter now drives a continuously variable Intelligent Variable Transmission instead of the old six-speed automatic, lifting economy to 31 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. At $19,300 the SE is also the first Elantra to get Hyundai SmartSense as standard, with automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver attention warning on every car.
