The Hyundai Sonata is Hyundai's mid-size, front-wheel-drive family sedan, sold continuously in the United States since the 1989 model year and built in Montgomery, Alabama from 2005 until 2022. Named after the musical form, it began life in Korea in 1985 as a re-trimmed Hyundai Stellar and grew into the company's highest-volume car in America, squaring off against the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and its corporate cousin the Kia Optima.
The nameplate turned a corner with the sixth-generation YF of 2011, whose "Fluidic Sculpture" styling and all-four-cylinder engine lineup pushed U.S. sales past 200,000 a year. The seventh-generation LF that followed for 2015 deliberately calmed that styling down and chased refinement instead, adding a 1.6-liter turbo Eco model and, from 2016, an all-new hybrid and the brand's first plug-in hybrid. The SE is the entry point to the completely redesigned seventh-generation Sonata, opening at $21,150 before destination — one of the lowest base prices in the mid-size class. It uses a retuned 2.4-liter direct-injected four rated at 185 hp, down 5 hp from 2014 but noticeably quieter and smoother, driving the front wheels through a reworked six-speed Shiftronic automatic. Brand new for 2015 at $23,275, the Eco is not a mild hybrid — it pairs a twin-scroll turbocharged 1.6-liter four making 178 hp and 195 lb-ft with a seven-speed dry dual-clutch transmission, and it is the mileage champion of the non-hybrid range at 28/38 mpg. MotorTrend clocked it at 7.8 seconds to 60 mph, making it the quickest 2015 Sonata of any kind. Equipment is roughly SE-with-Popular-package level, with a power driver's seat and LED daytime running lights.

The $28,575 Sport 2.0T replaces the old SE 2.0T and is the driver's choice of the 2015 range, with a smaller-turbine twin-scroll turbo 2.0-liter making 245 hp and 260 lb-ft — down from 274 hp in 2014 but far smoother and quieter. The Limited 2.0T is the flagship 2015 Sonata at $33,525, combining the 245-hp turbo 2.0-liter with the Limited's leather cabin and essentially every option fitted as standard. Its taller final drive and heavier equipment load drop EPA numbers to 21/31 mpg, the thirstiest Sonata of the year. A grey-accent interior treatment was offered at the same price.

Uniquely for 2015, the Sonata Hybrid did not follow the rest of the range into the new body — it carried over unchanged in the previous sixth-generation YF shell at $26,000. Its Blue Drive system pairs an Atkinson-cycle 2.4-liter four with a 35 kW electric motor and a lithium-polymer battery through a conventional six-speed automatic for 199 hp combined, and it remained the most economical Sonata at 36/40 mpg. A replacement built on the new platform arrived for 2016.

The $29,500 Hybrid Limited tops the carryover hybrid range for 2015, adding leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, navigation with a rearview camera, Infinity audio, heated front and rear seats and 17-inch alloys to the standard Blue Drive powertrain. Like the base Hybrid it uses the 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle four with a 35 kW motor for 199 hp combined and keeps the outgoing sixth-generation bodyshell for one final year.

The $21,300 SE remains the value play of the range and picks up meaningful content for 2016: a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen with Android Auto, a rearview camera and Blue Link telematics all become standard. Power still comes from the 185-hp 2.4-liter direct-injected four through a six-speed automatic, and Hyundai swapped several suspension links to aluminium this year to sharpen the ride. 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE
The 2017 SE opens the range at $21,600 and now bundles Apple CarPlay alongside Android Auto on its standard 7.0-inch touchscreen, joining the rearview camera, Blue Link telematics and Bluetooth audio streaming. Mechanically nothing changes: the 185-hp 2.4-liter direct-injected four and six-speed Shiftronic automatic carry over for 25/36 mpg. Hyundai's main 2017 work was simplifying option packages across the range.

2020 Hyundai Sonata SE
The $23,600 SE opens the completely redesigned eighth-generation Sonata, which rides on a new platform with "Sensuous Sportiness" bodywork, a 1.4-inch longer wheelbase and a much quieter cabin. It uses a new Smartstream 2.5-liter four making 191 hp and 181 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic, and at 28/38 mpg it is the most efficient gas-only Sonata. Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-following assist are standard on every trim.
2020 Hyundai Sonata SEL
At $25,700 the SEL adds synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, keyless ignition, automatic climate control and satellite radio, and unlocks options including leather seats, wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, Highway Drive Assist and a 10.3-inch navigation touchscreen. Larger wheels shave a little economy to 27/37 mpg. The Car Connection called it the value pick of the lineup.

The $27,750 Hybrid Blue is the efficiency champion of the whole American sedan market for 2020, rated by the EPA at 50 mpg city, 54 highway and 52 combined — the highest highway figure of any sedan on sale. Its powertrain combines a 150-hp 2.0-liter Atkinson four with a 51-hp motor and a six-speed automatic for 192 hp combined, and new Active Shift Control uses the motor to speed up gearchanges. At $34,475 the N Line remains the enthusiast's Sonata, its 290-hp, 311-lb-ft turbocharged 2.5-liter driving through an eight-speed wet dual-clutch for a 5.3-second 0-60 mph run. MotorTrend came away from its first drive saying the car "can legitimately run with BMWs." For 2023 it trades its compact spare for a tire mobility kit. EPA figures are 23/33 mpg.
