BMW M2: General Information
The BMW M2 is the smallest and lightest car in BMW's M range, a two-door rear-wheel-drive coupe built on the compact 2 Series. It arrived for the 2016 model year as the F87, replacing the 1 Series M Coupe, and quickly became the enthusiast favourite of the modern M line for its short wheelbase and comparatively low weight.
The F87 launched with the 365-hp N55 single-turbo straight-six. For 2019 BMW dropped in a detuned version of the M3's twin-turbo S55 and renamed the car M2 Competition, lifting output to 405 hp. A track-focused M2 CS followed for 2020 with 444 hp, carbon-fibre bodywork and adaptive dampers. F87 production ended after the 2021 model year.
The second-generation G87 arrived for 2023 on the CLAR platform shared with the M3 and M4, powered by the twin-turbo S58 six. It began at 453 hp, rose to 473 hp for 2025, and gained a 523-hp M2 CS for 2026. Both generations offer a six-speed manual — a rarity in the current market — alongside a seven-speed dual-clutch on the F87 or an eight-speed torque-converter automatic on the G87. Every M2 seats four and carries 13.8 cu ft of luggage.
