BMW M3: General Information

The BMW M3 is the high-performance version of the 3 Series sedan and the car that defines BMW's M division. The fifth generation, code F80, ran in the U.S. from 2015 to 2018 and was the first M3 to be sold only as a four-door — the coupe and convertible split off to become the M4.

The F80 used the 425-hp S55 twin-turbo straight-six with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch, a switch from the outgoing V8 that traded character for torque and economy. A 453-hp M3 CS with carbon-fibre bodywork closed the generation out for 2018.

The sixth-generation G80 arrived for 2021 with the 473-hp S58 six and a controversial tall kidney grille. The manual is reserved for the rear-drive base car; the 503-hp Competition uses an eight-speed torque-converter automatic, and from 2022 an all-wheel-drive Competition xDrive joined, dropping 0-60 mph to 3.4 seconds. A 543-hp M3 CS arrived for 2024, and the 2025 facelift lifted the xDrive Competition to 523 hp. Every M3 seats five.
