BMW M4: General Information
The BMW M4 is the two-door counterpart to the M3, created for the 2015 model year when BMW split the 3 Series coupe and convertible off into the 4 Series. Mechanically it is an M3 in a different body: same engines, same gearboxes, same chassis hardware, sold as a coupe and a folding-hardtop convertible.
The first generation, F82 coupe and F83 convertible, used the 425-hp S55 twin-turbo straight-six. It spawned the most extreme cars of the range — the 493-hp, water-injected M4 GTS for 2016 and the 454-hp M4 CS for 2019 and 2020.
The second-generation G82 arrived for 2021 with the 473-hp S58 six and the tall kidney grille. A six-speed manual is offered only on the rear-drive base coupe; the 503-hp Competition uses an eight-speed automatic, and M xDrive all-wheel drive joined for 2022 along with the returning convertible. The rear-drive, 543-hp M4 CSL came for 2023, an all-wheel-drive M4 CS for 2025, and the facelift lifted the xDrive cars to 523 hp. Every M4 seats four.
