BMW M5: General Information

The BMW M5 is the high-performance version of the 5 Series and the car that invented the super-saloon class in 1984. Three generations reached the U.S. in this period, each a step further from the naturally aspirated cars that made the name.

The F10, sold here through 2016, used a 560-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch — or, unusually for the class, an optional six-speed manual. The F90 replaced it for 2018 and brought M xDrive all-wheel drive with a selectable rear-drive mode, 600 hp, and a conventional eight-speed automatic; a 617-hp Competition sat above it and a 627-hp M5 CS capped the range for 2022.

The G90 arrived for 2025 as a plug-in hybrid, pairing the V8 with an electric motor in the gearbox for 717 hp and about 25 miles of electric range — at the cost of roughly 1,000 lb of kerb weight. It also brought the M5 Touring wagon to the U.S. for the first time. Every M5 seats five.
