The BMW i4 is a battery-electric five-door liftback, sold in the U.S. from the 2022 model year. Internally it is the G26, and it shares its body and CLAR platform with the combustion 4 Series Gran Coupe rather than being a bespoke EV — a deliberate choice that let BMW build it on the same Munich line as the 3 and 4 Series. The hatchback tailgate gives it 16.6 cu ft of luggage space behind the rear seats, well beyond what the four-door's silhouette suggests, and it seats five.
The range opens with the rear-drive eDrive35, added for 2023, which uses a 70.2 kWh battery and 282 hp. The rear-drive eDrive40 is the volume car at 335 hp on an 83.9 kWh pack, enlarged to 84.3 kWh with the 2025 facelift. All-wheel drive arrived for 2024 as the 396-hp xDrive40. Topping the range is the M Performance car: the 536-hp M50 from launch through 2025, replaced for 2026 by the 593-hp M60 xDrive. Every version drives through a single-speed direct-drive reduction gear.
