The first-generation car (code OS, U.S. model years 2018–2023) rides on a B-segment platform derived from the Hyundai i30, with a torsion-beam rear axle on front-drive cars and an independent multi-link setup when all-wheel drive is fitted. American buyers got a 147-hp 2.0-liter Nu four with a six-speed automatic or a 175-hp 1.6-liter Gamma turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch. A battery-electric Kona Electric joined for 2019 with a 64-kWh pack, 201 hp and 258 miles of EPA range. The global 2020 facelift arrived in America for the 2022 model year, swapping the base automatic for a CVT, lifting the turbo to 195 hp and adding both an N Line appearance trim and the 276-hp, 8-speed wet-DCT Kona N. The second-generation SX2 car followed for 2024 on the Hyundai-Kia K3 platform, roughly seven inches longer, with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic behind the turbo and a Kona Electric offering 48.6- or 64.8-kWh batteries.
What the Kona has always done well is drive: sharp steering, a firm and eager chassis, and a huge amount of standard equipment for the money, backed by Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. What it gave up in the first generation was space — 19.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and a famously tight back bench — which the second-generation car fixed with 25.5 cubic feet and about an inch more rear legroom. Across the U.S. run, output spans 147 to 276 hp, gasoline economy runs from 23 to 32 mpg combined, the Electric returns 116–120 MPGe with 200–261 miles of range, and base prices have climbed from $19,500 in 2018 to nearly $35,000 for the short-lived Kona N.

2018 Hyundai Kona SE
The SE opens the all-new Kona range at $19,500 with the 147-hp 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four and a six-speed automatic, front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive a $1,300 option on every trim. Because 2018 is the nameplate's first year in America there is no prior model to compare it to — everything here is new, from the split-lamp face to the 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that comes standard even at the bottom of the lineup. Sixteen-inch alloys, full-LED headlights, a rearview camera and Bluetooth round out the base equipment.

SEL is the volume trim at $21,150 and keeps the 147-hp 2.0-liter and six-speed automatic while adding the convenience and driver-assistance gear the SE goes without. Over the SE it brings 17-inch alloys, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, proximity key with push-button start and a leather-wrapped wheel and shift knob. A $150 contrasting-roof treatment is the only significant appearance option.

Limited is where the Kona gets its good engine: a 175-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter Gamma turbo-four paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, for $24,700. It also adds 18-inch alloys, LED taillights, a power sunroof, leather seating, an eight-way power driver's seat and an eight-speaker Infinity audio system. MotorTrend timed a front-drive 1.6T Kona to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and an all-wheel-drive car in 6.6.
2018 Hyundai Kona Ultimate
Ultimate tops the first-year Kona range at $27,400 and pairs the 175-hp turbo powertrain with the technology package the Limited misses. It is the only 2018 Kona with an 8.0-inch touchscreen and navigation, a color head-up display, a wireless charging pad, rain-sensing wipers and the full suite of active safety systems including forward-collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. Loaded with all-wheel drive it stops just under $30,000 before destination.

The base SE carries over into the Kona's second year at $19,990, up $490 on 2018, still with the 147-hp 2.0-liter four and a six-speed automatic. The meaningful 2019 change is that forward-collision-avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and driver attention warning become standard across the range rather than optional, and a pair of front USB ports replaces the old 12-volt outlet. Sixteen-inch alloys, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and LED running lights remain standard.

SEL lists at $21,800 and remains the value pick, adding 17-inch alloys, heated front seats, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, SiriusXM and HD Radio, and proximity key with push-button start over the SE. It also gains access to Hyundai's Blue Link connected-car services for remote start and vehicle status. The 2019 palette adds Sunset Orange while silver leaves the contrasting-roof menu.

Limited moves to $25,550 for 2019 and is the cheapest way into the 175-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter Gamma turbo and its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It layers on 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, fog lamps, a power sunroof, leather seating, an eight-way power driver's seat with power lumbar, automatic climate control and an eight-speaker Infinity system. Turbocharged Konas are actually more efficient in town than the base engine, at 28 mpg city.

The $27,500 Ultimate is the fully loaded gasoline Kona, adding an 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, a head-up display, a wireless charging pad, automatic high beams, rear parking sensors and pedestrian detection for the automatic emergency braking system. It shares the Limited's 175-hp turbo and dual-clutch transmission, and with all-wheel drive it lands at $28,900 — $200 more than the equivalent 2018 car.

Built as a one-year tie-in with Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, the $30,550 Iron Man Edition is a top-spec turbocharged Kona in matte gray with red accents, blue daytime running lights, Stark Industries badging, an Iron Man-themed instrument cluster and Tony Stark's signature on the dashboard. Mechanically it is an Ultimate — 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo, seven-speed dual-clutch — but it was sold only for 2019 and is the most expensive gasoline Kona of the year at $31,950 with all-wheel drive.

The Kona Electric is new to the United States for 2019 and is Hyundai's second EV after the Ioniq. A 64-kWh lithium-ion polymer pack feeds a single front-mounted permanent-magnet motor good for 201 hp and 291 lb-ft, and the EPA certifies 258 miles of range and 120 MPGe combined — the longest range of any electric crossover near its price at launch. It starts at $36,950 in SEL form and is front-drive only; sales were initially limited to California and other ZEV states.

The $22,100 SEL keeps the 2.0-liter and six-speed automatic and adds 17-inch alloys, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, black roof rails, a leather-wrapped wheel and proximity key with push-button start. For 2020 the old SEL-with-Tech-Package configuration is split out into its own SEL Plus trim, so the SEL itself is a cleaner, cheaper proposition than in 2019.

Limited costs $26,100 for 2020 and is the entry point to the 175-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter turbo and its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It brings 18-inch alloys, LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery and chrome grille surrounds. New this year is an orange interior trim treatment offered with Sunset Orange paint. MotorTrend clocked a front-drive 1.6T Kona to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and the all-wheel-drive version in 6.6.

The $27,950 Ultimate is the top gasoline Kona and picks up its most significant upgrade yet for 2020: adaptive cruise control becomes standard. The 64-kWh pack, 201-hp front motor and 291 lb-ft of torque still deliver an EPA-rated 258 miles and 120 MPGe combined, numbers that remained class-leading against the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf Plus. Availability was still concentrated in California and other ZEV states.

The last pre-facelift Kona SE lists at $20,500, $200 above 2020, and its headline change is that the 8.0-inch touchscreen becomes standard on every trim, so even the cheapest Kona now gets the bigger display. Mechanically nothing moves: 147 hp and 132 lb-ft from the 2.0-liter Nu four through a six-speed automatic, with front-wheel drive standard. Lime Twist and Sunset Orange leave the paint chart this year.

MotorTrend timed a front-drive 2.0-liter Kona SEL to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds during SUV of the Year testing — adequate rather than quick, but the chassis is the point.

In its second and final year the SEL Plus lists at $24,150 and continues to bundle the sunroof, front fog lights, power lumbar support, eight-speaker Infinity audio, wireless charging and the 4.2-inch color cluster display onto the 2.0-liter SEL. The 2022 facelift dropped the trim entirely, folding most of its content into an SEL Convenience package.

The Night Edition is new for 2021 and was sold only that year. Priced at $26,200, it pairs the 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo and seven-speed dual-clutch with blacked-out 18-inch alloys, gloss-black exterior trim, a black grille, dark badging and black-and-red interior accents. It undercuts the mechanically similar Limited by $100 while trading its leather and chrome for a menacing monochrome look.

At $26,300 the Limited carries the 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo, seven-speed dual-clutch, 18-inch alloys, LED headlights and taillights, leather seating and chrome grille surrounds. It is quicker than the base engine by nearly two seconds to 60 mph and, thanks to standard LED headlights, is one of only two 2021 Konas that qualifies for the IIHS Top Safety Pick award.

The $28,150 Ultimate is the last of its name — for 2022 the Limited becomes the top gasoline Kona. It combines the 175-hp turbo powertrain with an 8.0-inch navigation touchscreen, head-up display, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors and pedestrian detection for the automatic emergency braking system.

MotorTrend ran a comparison test between the 1.6T Kona and the Kona Electric and preferred the EV's smoother, stronger powertrain, noting that its 250-plus miles of range covers most journeys. This is the last year the Electric offers a top Ultimate grade.

2022 brings the Kona's mid-cycle redesign to America, and the SE opens the range at $21,300. The 147-hp 2.0-liter four carries over but trades last year's six-speed automatic for a continuously variable transmission, which lifts economy from 27/33 to 30/35 mpg. Outside, the body is 1.6 inches longer with a wider grille, beefier cladding and faux skid plates; inside, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard.

SEL lists at $23,100 and is the trim The Car Connection called the best value in the redesigned range. It adds 17-inch alloys, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, keyless start, heated mirrors and a leather-wrapped wheel. Most of the content that used to define the discontinued SEL Plus now lives in a $1,700 Convenience package covering heated front seats, automatic climate control, wireless charging and hidden cargo storage.

New for 2022, the N Line is the sporty-looking Kona that costs sensible money — $25,850 — and it is the cheapest way into the turbocharged engine, now uprated from 175 to 195 hp. It swaps the plastic cladding for body-colored panels, adds a body kit, unique 18-inch wheels, sport seats, a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a power driver's seat. It is also the least expensive Kona offered with the larger 10.3-inch infotainment screen.

For 2022 the Limited replaces the old Ultimate as the top non-performance Kona, at $28,600. It shares the N Line's 195-hp turbo and seven-speed dual-clutch but trades the body kit for leather upholstery, a power sunroof, LED headlights, a 10.3-inch touchscreen and standard adaptive cruise control that works down to a stop, plus rear parking sensors. The Car Connection judged its value 'saggy' relative to the cheaper SEL, but it is the most complete Kona short of the N.

The 2022 Kona Electric gets the same redesigned face as the rest of the range plus a large price cut: the entry SEL drops from $37,390 to $34,000, a $3,390 reduction that made it one of the cheapest 250-plus-mile EVs on sale. 2024 brings the all-new second-generation SX2 Kona, and the SE opens it at $24,250 — a $2,110 jump that buys a much bigger car. Length grows 5.7 inches to 171.3, the wheelbase stretches 2.3 inches to 104.7, and cargo space behind the rear seat balloons from 19.2 to 25.5 cubic feet. The 147-hp 2.0-liter and CVT carry over, and dual 12.3-inch displays plus a full-width pixel light bar are standard.

SEL lists at $25,600 and adds heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, a proximity key, 17-inch alloys and Hyundai's Bluelink+ connected services on top of the SE. Like the SE it uses the 147-hp 2.0-liter and CVT, and it is the trim most 2024 Kona buyers chose. A Convenience package adds a sunroof, wireless charging and a power driver's seat.

The N Line costs $30,800 for 2024 and is the cheapest route to the redesigned turbo powertrain, a 190-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter now paired with a conventional eight-speed torque-converter automatic instead of the old seven-speed dual-clutch — a change that trades a little urgency for far better low-speed manners. It also brings an N Line body kit, dual exhaust tips, 19-inch alloys, sport seats and a leather-wrapped flat-bottom wheel.

Limited tops the gasoline range at $31,800 with the 190-hp turbo, eight-speed automatic, leather seating, a power sunroof, ventilated front seats, a Bose premium audio system, a head-up display, surround-view monitor and Highway Driving Assist. MotorTrend tested a Limited AWD and concluded the second-generation Kona is 'bigger and better' than the car it replaced, if pricier.

The Kona Electric returns on the SX2 platform for 2024 and, for the first time in America, in two battery sizes. The $32,675 SE uses a 48.6-kWh pack and a 133-hp motor for 200 miles of range and 118 MPGe, while the SEL and Limited step up to a 64.8-kWh pack and 201 hp for 261 miles and 116 MPGe. All versions gain vehicle-to-load power export, and cargo space rises to 25.5 cubic feet.

The 2025 SE holds the line at $24,550, just $300 up on the SX2 Kona's launch year, with the same 147-hp 2.0-liter four and CVT. Nothing significant changes mechanically in the redesign's second year; the news is further up the range, where a lower-cost N Line S grade joins. The SE still gets dual 12.3-inch displays, LED pixel light bars, 17-inch wheels and Hyundai's full standard active-safety suite.

SEL lists at $25,900 for 2025 and remains the mainstream choice, adding heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, a proximity key and Bluelink+ connected services. It is the last model year for the plain SEL badge — for 2026 Hyundai split the grade into SEL Sport and SEL Premium. A $2,200 Convenience package adds a sunroof, wireless charging and a power driver's seat.
2025 Hyundai Kona N Line S
New for 2025 and sold only that year, the N Line S is a de-contented N Line that puts the 190-hp 1.6-liter turbo and eight-speed automatic into a $29,550 package — $1,550 cheaper than the full N Line. It keeps the sporty body kit, dual exhaust tips and 19-inch alloys but drops the Bose audio, sunroof and power driver's seat. It made the turbo engine the cheapest it has ever been in the second-generation car.

The full N Line costs $31,100 and pairs the 190-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter turbo and eight-speed automatic with a power sunroof, Bose premium audio, a power driver's seat, sport front seats and a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel on top of the N Line body kit and 19-inch alloys. This is the last year for the gasoline N Line in America — the 2026 range replaces it with SEL Sport and SEL Premium grades.

Limited tops the 2025 gasoline range at $32,100, a $300 rise, and remains the most complete Kona: 190-hp turbo, eight-speed automatic, leather seating with heated and ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, Bose audio, a head-up display, surround-view monitor, blind-spot view monitor and Highway Driving Assist 2. All-wheel drive takes it to $33,600.

The 2025 Kona Electric gains an N Line grade to sit between the SEL and Limited, giving the EV the same body kit and 19-inch wheels as the gasoline car — at the cost of range, which drops from 261 to 230 miles and 116 to 103 MPGe on the larger wheels. The $32,975 SE keeps the 48.6-kWh pack, 133-hp motor and 200 miles of range. This is the last U.S. Kona Electric: the EPA certified no 2026 model year version.

The 2026 SE opens the range at $25,350, up $800, with the familiar 147-hp 2.0-liter four and CVT. The big news this year is a reshuffled middle of the lineup: the plain SEL and both N Line grades are gone, replaced by SEL Sport and SEL Premium, and the Kona Electric is no longer certified for sale in the United States. The SE keeps dual 12.3-inch displays, the full-width pixel light bars and Hyundai's standard active-safety suite.

New for 2026, SEL Sport takes over the volume slot the plain SEL used to hold, listing at $26,675. It keeps the 147-hp 2.0-liter and CVT but adds a sportier appearance treatment with larger wheels plus heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist and a proximity key. It slots $1,325 above the SE and $1,600 below the turbocharged SEL Premium.

Also new for 2026, SEL Premium is the cheapest turbocharged Kona at $28,275 — some $2,825 less than the 2025 N Line it effectively replaces — pairing the 190-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter with the eight-speed automatic. It adds a power sunroof, wireless charging, a power driver's seat and upgraded interior trim. Cars built through September 2025 carry a slightly higher $28,550 list price.
