The Tesla Model X is a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV built at Tesla's Fremont, California factory. It is derived from the Model S sedan platform — sharing roughly 30 percent of its parts — and first reached customers in September 2015. Every Model X uses dual-motor (or, on the later Plaid, tri-motor) all-wheel drive and a single-speed direct-drive transaxle at each axle, and every one is sold with three rows of forward-facing seats available.
What sets the Model X apart is its double-hinged rear "falcon-wing" doors, which pivot up from the roofline and fold at the window line so they need barely more width than the vehicle itself to open. A sonar system adjusts their opening arcs to avoid low garage ceilings and adjacent cars. Other signatures are the vast panoramic windshield that extends over the front occupants, a 17-inch touchscreen, a HEPA cabin filter marketed as "Bioweapon Defense Mode," a front trunk, and a 5,000 lb tow rating with the optional tow package.
