The Tesla Model Y is a battery-electric compact crossover SUV built on the Model 3 platform, with which it shares roughly three quarters of its components. U.S. Model Y variants are offered as single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive, the latter pairing a front induction motor with a rear internal-permanent-magnet motor that can be disengaged when its output is not needed. Battery packs have ranged from roughly 60 to 81 kWh usable, using 2170 nickel-based cells on Long Range and Performance versions and LFP or 4680 structural packs on later standard-range builds. The Model Y was also the first Tesla to use a heat pump rather than resistive heating for cabin warmth, which reduces cold-weather range loss.
Across its pre-refresh U.S. life the Model Y spanned roughly 244 to 330 miles of EPA range, about 280 to 456 hp, and transaction prices that swung from the high $40,000s to the mid $60,000s as Tesla repriced the car repeatedly. Every version supports up to 11.5 kW AC charging and up to 250 kW DC fast charging on the Supercharger network, and all can tow up to 3,500 pounds when fitted with the factory tow package.

2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD
The Long Range AWD was one of only two Model Y configurations Tesla actually delivered in the United States for 2020, with customer cars arriving from Fremont in March 2020. It pairs a front induction motor and a rear permanent-magnet motor with a 75 kWh pack for 384 hp and an EPA-rated 316 miles. Launch pricing was $52,990 before the $1,200 destination fee; Tesla cut it to $49,990 in July 2020 when the promised Standard Range version was cancelled.

The Performance AWD took the Long Range's dual-motor layout and swapped in a stronger rear motor plus revised tuning for 456 hp and 497 lb-ft, cutting the 0-60 mph claim to 3.5 seconds. It also added a rear spoiler and, unusually, a no-cost Performance Upgrade Package with 21-inch wheels, upgraded brakes and a lowered ride height. Launch pricing was $60,990 before the $1,200 destination fee, later cut to $59,990 in July 2020.

Tesla finally released the entry-level Standard Range RWD on January 7, 2021, alongside the new seven-seat option, then stopped taking orders for it barely six weeks later on February 21 — making it the shortest-lived Model Y configuration ever sold in the U.S. It uses a single rear permanent-magnet motor with a smaller 2170-cell pack of roughly 60 kWh usable, good for 280 hp and 244 miles of EPA range. It launched at $39,990 before the destination fee.
2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD
The Long Range AWD remained the volume Model Y for 2021 and gained range, climbing from 316 to 326 EPA miles on the same dual-motor layout and roughly 81 kWh pack. It also picked up the new optional third row and, from spring 2021, lost the forward-facing radar as Tesla moved to the camera-only Tesla Vision driver-assistance stack. Tesla raised prices repeatedly during the year, ending at an MSRP of $58,990.

The Performance AWD stayed the quick one for 2021, keeping its uprated rear motor for 456 hp and 497 lb-ft and a claimed 3.5-second 0-60 mph. EPA range slipped to 303 miles as the 21-inch Uberturbine wheels, performance brakes and lowered suspension became the standard specification rather than a separate no-cost package. Tesla's price ratcheted upward through the year to an MSRP of $63,990.

Listed on Tesla's configurator simply as Model Y All-Wheel Drive, this Gigafactory Texas-built variant entered production on April 9, 2022 as the first Model Y with 4680 cells and a structural battery pack. Its smaller 67.6 kWh pack is rated at 279 EPA miles, and it launched at $59,990 — initially restricted to employees, invited reservation holders and Texas-area buyers before opening to the public in April 2023. Tesla has never published a horsepower figure for it.
2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD
For 2022 the Long Range AWD carried on with its dual-motor layout and roughly 81 kWh pack while nudging EPA range up again to 330 miles. It was also the only Model Y that could be ordered with the third-row seat that year. Supply constraints and strong demand pushed its MSRP as high as $65,990, the most expensive the Long Range Model Y has ever been.

The Performance AWD was unchanged mechanically for 2022, still making 456 hp and 497 lb-ft for a 3.5-second 0-60 mph claim and 303 EPA miles on its standard 21-inch Uberturbine wheels. Like the rest of the range it lost its ultrasonic parking sensors on late-2022 builds. Its MSRP peaked at $69,990.

The 4680-cell, Gigafactory Texas-built Model Y AWD finally went on general sale around April 7, 2023 at $49,990 before options, then fell further as Tesla kept cutting prices through the year. It keeps the 67.6 kWh structural battery pack and 279 EPA miles. Tesla stopped taking orders for it on September 14, 2023, making 2023 its final model year.
2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD
The Long Range AWD held its 330-mile EPA rating and roughly 81 kWh pack for 2023 but became dramatically cheaper: Tesla's January 12, 2023 cuts dropped it below the $55,000 cap for the federal EV tax credit, and further reductions left it at $48,990 by late in the year. Detail changes included heated wipers and a revised suspension tune on some builds.

Tesla brought the cheapest Model Y back to the U.S. in October 2023 and certified it as a 2024 model, listing it at $42,990 with 260 miles of EPA range. Hardware is identical to the Long Range RWD that replaced it — the same single-motor, roughly 75 kWh car — with a software lock capping usable range. Tesla stopped selling it in May 2024, making 2024 both its first and its only U.S. model year.

Announced at the Model Y's 2019 unveiling but never built until now, the Long Range RWD finally reached U.S. buyers in May 2024 at $44,990. It uses the same single rear motor and roughly 75 kWh pack as the outgoing RWD but without the software cap, which lifts EPA range to 320 miles on the standard 19-inch Gemini wheels. It was the most efficient 2024 Model Y and the range-champion of the U.S. lineup.

The dual-motor Long Range remained the volume Model Y for 2024 at $47,990, keeping its 384 hp and roughly 75 kWh pack. EPA range slipped to 310 miles on 19-inch wheels — down from 330 in 2023 — after Tesla revised its certification, and the optional 20-inch wheels drop it to 287 miles. Colour-changing ambient lighting, upgraded cabin trim and standard Sirius XM were the year's cabin updates.

Everyone expected the "Juniper" refresh to land as a 2025 model, but Tesla certified the redesigned car as a 2026 instead, so the U.S. 2025 Model Y is mechanically identical to the 2024. The single-motor Long Range RWD stayed at $44,990 and gained range on paper, climbing from 320 to 337 EPA miles — the highest figure any pre-refresh Model Y ever earned. It was the last model year for the trim before the refreshed car renamed it Premium RWD.
2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD
The dual-motor Long Range was carried over unchanged for 2025 at $47,990, still rated at 384 hp and 376 lb-ft with a 311-mile EPA range. Tesla dropped the seven-seat option during the early-2025 changeover to the refreshed car, so only the earliest 2025 builds could be ordered with the third row. This was the trim's final model year — the refreshed 2026 car renamed it Premium AWD.

The pre-refresh Performance closed out its run for 2025 at $51,490, unchanged at 456 hp and 497 lb-ft with a 3.5-second 0-60 mph claim and a 155 mph top speed. EPA range dipped again to 277 miles on its 21-inch Uberturbine wheels, the lowest of any U.S. Model Y. A completely re-engineered Performance built on the Juniper platform replaced it for 2026.

2026 Tesla Model Y Standard RWD
Tesla's cheapest Model Y arrived in October 2025 as the Model Y Standard at $39,990, $5,000 under the Premium RWD, and lost the "Standard" name in February 2026 so it is now simply badged Model Y. It pairs a 60.0 kWh LFP pack — 57.5 kWh usable — with a single rear motor for 321 EPA miles on the standard 18-inch wheels. The savings come from a long list of deletions: no front or rear light bars, cloth-and-vegan-leather seats, seven speakers instead of fifteen, passive dampers, indirect tyre-pressure monitoring and a headliner that blanks off the glass roof.
2026 Tesla Model Y Standard AWD
Tesla added a dual-motor version of the entry Model Y in February 2026, at the same time as it deleted the "Standard" badge, for $41,990 — a flat $2,000 over the rear-driver. An AC induction motor on the front axle joins the rear permanent-magnet unit for a combined 397 hp and 389 lb-ft, and the extra weight and drag trim EPA range to 294 miles. Equipment is otherwise identical to the rear-drive car, opaque headliner included.
2026 Tesla Model Y Premium RWD
The single-motor version of the "Juniper" refresh started life as the Model Y Long Range RWD and was renamed Premium RWD in October 2025 when the Standard arrived beneath it. At $44,990 it buys an 82.0 kWh nickel-based pack — 79.0 kWh usable — good for 357 EPA miles, the longest-legged Model Y ever sold in the U.S. Premium equipment covers the full-width light bars, ventilated front seats, power-folding rear seats, a fifteen-speaker system and an 8.0-inch rear touchscreen.
2026 Tesla Model Y Premium AWD
The dual-motor Premium is the volume Juniper Model Y, listed at $48,990 with 397 hp, 389 lb-ft and 327 EPA miles. It is the only 2026 Model Y that can be ordered with a third row: Tesla brought the trunk-mounted seven-seat option back in January 2026 as a $2,500 extra on this trim alone. Suspension is retuned with frequency-dependent dampers, and the cabin adds ambient lighting, a rear 8.0-inch screen and fifteen speakers plus a subwoofer.
2026 Tesla Model Y Performance AWD
A completely re-engineered Performance reached North America in October 2025 at $57,990, borrowing the Model 3 Performance powertrain for 460 hp and a 3.3-second 0-60 mph claim. Its high-density LG "5M" pack of roughly 82-84 kWh usable still returns 306 EPA miles, more than the outgoing car managed, and adaptive dampers replace the old lowered-and-stiffened setup. Track Mode is gone, swapped for Standard and Reduced stability-assist modes.
2026 Tesla Model Y Long Range Launch Series AWD
Tesla marked the start of refreshed Model Y production with a one-off Launch Series, revealed on January 23, 2025 for U.S., Canadian and Mexican deliveries from March 2025 at roughly $59,990. Mechanically it is the Long Range AWD — 397 hp and 327 EPA miles — but the price bundles in Full Self-Driving (Supervised), normally an $8,000 option. Launch Series badging appears on the liftgate, the doorsill plates and the charging console, with a puddle-lamp logo and vegan suede trim on black interiors.
