BMW X5: General Information
The BMW X5 invented the luxury performance SUV in 1999 and remains BMW's most important vehicle in that class. Two generations appear here, both built at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, which is the company's largest factory anywhere.
The F15 ran through 2018 with 300-hp and 445-hp petrol engines, a 255-hp turbodiesel good for 27 mpg combined, and from 2017 the xDrive40e plug-in hybrid — BMW's first electrified X5, with about 14 miles of electric range. The fourth-generation G05 arrived for 2019, larger and with a split tailgate, standardising on a 335-hp straight-six that rose to 375 hp for 2024.
Plug-in hybrids continued with the 389-hp xDrive45e from 2021 and the 483-hp xDrive50e from 2024, the latter offering about 40 miles of electric range. Above them sit the M50i and later M60i with a 523-hp V8, and the full X5 M with up to 617 hp. An optional third row makes the X5 a seven-seater.
