Hyundai Ioniq — Specs, Trims, Prices & Owner Reviews

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback sold in the United States for the 2017 through 2022 model years under the internal code AE. It was the first Hyundai designed from a clean sheet with no conventional gasoline-only version: every American Ioniq is a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric car, all sharing one body, one 106.3-inch wheelbase and a front-wheel-drive layout. Hyundai aimed it squarely at the Toyota Prius, and it shares its platform and suspension hardware with the Kia Niro and the Elantra.

Hyundai Ioniq: General Information

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback sold in the United States for the 2017 through 2022 model years under the internal code AE. It was the first Hyundai designed from a clean sheet with no conventional gasoline-only version: every American Ioniq is a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric car, all sharing one body, one 106.3-inch wheelbase and a front-wheel-drive layout. Hyundai aimed it squarely at the Toyota Prius, and it shares its platform and suspension hardware with the Kia Niro and the Elantra.

The Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Electric reached U.S. showrooms for 2017, and the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid joined them for 2018. A mid-cycle facelift arrived for 2020 with new front and rear fascias, a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen, a reshuffled Blue/SE/SEL/Limited trim ladder and — for the Electric — a larger 38.3 kWh battery that lifted range from 124 to 170 miles. The Electric was dropped from the U.S. lineup after 2021, and the whole Ioniq nameplate ended after 2022 as Hyundai handed the compact-hybrid job to the Elantra Hybrid and reused the Ioniq name for its dedicated EV sub-brand.

Its standout traits are efficiency and normality. A 0.24 drag coefficient, an aluminum hood and tailgate and low-rolling-resistance tires made the Ioniq Hybrid Blue one of the most fuel-efficient cars sold in America without a plug, and from 2017 through 2019 the Ioniq Electric was the most efficient EPA-certified vehicle of any kind at 136 MPGe. Unlike the Prius it uses a six-speed dual-clutch automatic rather than a CVT, and a conventional hatchback shape instead of avant-garde styling. Powertrains run from 139 hp in the Hybrid to 156 hp in the Plug-In and 118–134 hp in the Electric; U.S. base prices spanned roughly $22,200 to $38,800 before destination.

Hyundai Ioniq by model year

2017 Hyundai Ioniq

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue

Blue is the efficiency special and the cheapest way into the brand-new Ioniq, opening at $22,200 in its first year on sale. It runs 15-inch alloys wrapped in low-rolling-resistance tires and drops a few convenience items to hit an EPA-record 58 mpg combined — better than any Prius of the day. The 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle Kappa four and its 43-hp electric motor combine for 139 hp routed through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid SEL

SEL is the volume hybrid at $23,950 and adds the equipment Blue does without — heated front seats, dual-zone climate, an auto-dimming mirror and blind-spot monitoring — while keeping the 15-inch wheels. The extra weight and content cost it three mpg, dropping the EPA rating to 55 mpg combined. Mechanically it is identical to Blue: 139 hp, front drive, six-speed dual-clutch.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Limited

Limited tops the 2017 hybrid range at $27,500 with leather upholstery, a power driver's seat with memory, HID headlights and 17-inch alloys. Those bigger wheels and wider tires are what cost it fuel economy relative to Blue, though it still returns 55 mpg combined. An Ultimate Package added navigation, a sunroof and Infinity audio for a further $3,000.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric

The battery-electric Ioniq launched at $29,500 and immediately became the most efficient vehicle the EPA had ever certified, at 136 MPGe combined. A 28 kWh lithium-polymer pack under the rear seat feeds a 118-hp front motor for 124 miles of range, and a CCS Combo port allows DC fast charging. Hyundai sold it only in California and a handful of other ZEV states.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric Limited

At $32,500 the Electric Limited adds leather, a power driver's seat with memory, LED headlights and an eight-inch navigation system to the EV. Range, efficiency and the 118-hp motor are unchanged from the base car. It was the most expensive Ioniq of 2017 and, like the standard Electric, was restricted to ZEV states.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Blue

Blue carries over at $22,200 for 2018 as the fuel-economy leader of the range, still rated at an EPA-topping 58 mpg combined on its 15-inch low-rolling-resistance tires. Nothing mechanical changed: the 1.6-liter Atkinson-cycle four and 43-hp motor still make 139 hp through a six-speed dual-clutch. The big 2018 news elsewhere in the lineup was the arrival of the Plug-In Hybrid.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid SEL

SEL nudges up $50 to $24,000 and remains the mid-grade hybrid, trading three mpg for heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate and an auto-dimming mirror. It keeps Blue's 15-inch wheels and the 139-hp dual-clutch powertrain, and returns 55 mpg combined.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Limited

The $27,550 Limited is the loaded hybrid, with leather, a memory power driver's seat, HID headlights and 17-inch alloys that cost it a little highway economy. As in 2017 an Ultimate Package layered on navigation, a sunroof and Infinity audio. Output stays at 139 hp through the six-speed dual-clutch.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid

New for 2018, the Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid slots between the Hybrid and the Electric at $24,950. It swaps the Hybrid's 1.56 kWh pack for an 8.9 kWh one and its motor for a 60-hp unit, lifting combined output to 156 hp and adding 29 miles of electric-only driving before the gas engine takes over at 52 mpg. Cargo space drops to 23.0 cubic feet to make room for the battery.

2018 Hyundai Ioniq Electric

The battery-electric Ioniq holds at $29,500 for 2018 and remains the most efficient vehicle the EPA certifies, at 136 MPGe combined. Its 28 kWh pack and 118-hp front motor deliver 124 miles of range, and CCS fast charging restores 80 percent in about half an hour. Availability is still limited to California and other ZEV states.

For 2018 Hyundai loaded the Electric Limited with what had been optional equipment and repriced it at $36,000, making it by far the priciest Ioniq. Leather, a memory power driver's seat, LED headlights, navigation and Infinity audio all become standard. The 28 kWh battery, 118-hp motor and 124-mile range carry over unchanged.

The 139-hp hybrid powertrain and six-speed dual-clutch are unchanged.
